Historical trends are our best guide for the future. In a general sense, what has occurred before will occur again. The Sun will rise in the morning. Spring will follow winter. And, the Earth’s continents will continue sliding about.
Another take on this guidance is that non-renewables don’t last forever. If we drink all the water from a cup, it doesn’t automatically refill. Water streaming down a river doesn’t continually flow, there’s always ebbs and surges. The Earth’s resources don’t reappear when gone. These limits affect trends.
Energy is a non-renewable. The Sun will eventually run out of atoms to fuse. On Earth, all the fissioning atoms will be split. And, people will use all the petroleum. Historical trends show that we will use every last drop of petroleum available. Where will the future then be?
The following chart is the trend in energy consumption and energy reserves. Read more here.
