Tourism

We use energy for every activity; building skyscrapers and digging ditches. Simply being alive requires energy to power our bodies and minds. We naturally associate the energy used to perform these activities to an accomplishment, to a goal. Thus we are happy and ready to assign energy to these.

Tourism represents a different aspect of our lives. It is certainly a luxury rather than a necessity as we can live without touring. Yet, tourism is often cited as an economic justification for peoples’ livelihoods and it gets a great portion of the Earth’s reserves of energy.

But what is accomplished with tourism? Certainly the tourists get a greater appreciation of wonders of our world. Is this sufficient? Perhaps it is if in consequence they do much more to safeguard the future. Yet, I would bet that if polled, most people would place peace, security, health and the environment as much more worthy of investments of energy.

When considering the future, it is easy to follow mantras on what is good and what is bad. Yet, our actions indicate other than the common mantra.
