Go forth and multiply! What better a command than doing what comes instinctively and pleasurably? By aligning a vision with an instinct, an overall mantra gets ready acceptance. But, constant multiplication leads in short order to a huge population. As the Earth doesn’t have infinite resources then an infinite population isn’t possible and multiplication can’t go on forever.
In attempts to avoid a disastrous future of massive death by starvation, some people realize the wisdom of controlling population. Principles of one person families, infanticide and assisted suicide arise, issue forth with the hopes of lowering rates. Though these and other methods chip away at the steadily increasing number of people, they still shy away from the big population problem.
The problem or challenge is, succinctly, to hold the human population at a sustainable level. This challenge has two elements. One requires an estimate of the number of people. Two is a means to hold the population at this level.
The first is somewhat simple to determine and can be easily expressed as a function of the amount of available energy (as I’ve done in my book).
Holding a population at a given level presents a much greater challenge. Massively complex ecosystems allow huge quantities of inter-reacting species to co-exist at roughly sustainable and moderately constant levels. Within the systems, death and regeneration are natural events. However, people have exorcised themselves from the ecosystem and made these events extremely unnatural. Hence, our population doesn’t hold at any level, just continually expands.
We can have a future that includes more than maximizing the number of people, if we want. But, we need to identify and promulgate this vision before the shear number of people prevent anything more than using the available energy to maintain the status quo.
